The Northern Territory branch of the Electrical Trades Union says it has safety concerns about 16 Power and Water substations.
Last month two explosions at the Casuarina substation left thousands of residents in Darwin's northern suburbs without power.
Union spokesman, Trevor Gould says he is concerned for the safety of workers dealing with many other substations around Darwin and the rural area.
"It's just general degradation and deterioration of equipment.
"It's also the oil, the insulation oil, that's inside some of these pieces of equipment which can deteriorate over time, there's water ingress issues, there's all sort of things that can cause the equipment to fail," he said.
